Round #1 - MIA(10) defeats WAS(7) in 5

Game 1 at Washington
Miami 6 Washington 2
WP: Jose Fernandez (1-0)
LP: Max Scherzer (0-1)

Jose Fernandez was the story of this game.  He struck out 11 Nationals, many of them in key spots, as he pitched 7 innings, giving up 1 unearned run in the Miami victory.  Miami got their runs off the long ball with hitting 3 home runs along the way.  Giancarlo Stanton gave them a lead from which they’d never look back with a 2R HR in the 3rd inning.  Miami turned 4 great plays in the game, a trend that would continue in the series.  Washington left 9 men on base – a total that had them shaking their head at the end of the game.

Game 2 at Washington
Miami 10 Washington 0
WP: Dan Haren (1-0)
LP: Jordan Zimmerman (0-1)

Christian Yelich paced the Marlins in the laugher.  Yelich went 5-5 with 3 doubles and scored 4 runs.  Stanton contributed 3 more RBIs by doubling after he’d stuck out 3 times earlier.  Miami pounded out 16 hits in total, and Dan Haren turned back the clock to pitch a complete game shutout, giving up 4 hits and striking out 6.  Miami has kept Washington at bay through two games holding them to a .206 BA.

Game 3 at Miami
Washington 2 Miami 1
WP: Stephen Strasburg (1-0)
LP: Adam Conley (0-1)
SV: Craig Stammen (1)

Jayson Werth gave the Nationals their first lead of the series when he took a fast ball out of the park in the 2nd inning of game 3.  Stephen Strasburg pitched well and earned the victory by striking out 7 and giving up 1 earned run in six innings of work.  The Nationals bullpen came on and did what they failed to do so many times down the stretch for Matt Williams – they made the lead stand up with 3 scoreless innings.  Washington bats are still cold – this can’t last, can it?

Game 4 at Miami
Washington 8 Miami 0
WP: Gio Gonzalez (1-0)
LP: Mat Latos (0-1)

Here come the Nationals bats!  Washington scores 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning and cruise to an easy win.  It’s Washington to plays long ball hitting 4 (Harper, Robinson, Rendon and Desmond) home runs.  Harper, who entered the game 1-10, gets 3 hits total, as he shows signs of breaking out of his mini-slump.  Miami can manage only 5 singles off the Nationals’ pitchers, as Gio Gonzalez strikes out 8 in 7 innings of work.  The Nationals turn 3 double plays in the game, never giving the Marlins a chance to get their home crowd into the game.  We’ll be going back to Washington to play a Game 5.

Game 5 at Washington
Miami 10 Washington 1
WP: Brad Hand (1-0)
LP: Max Scherzer (0-2)

With Jose Fernanadez unavailable to make a second start for Miami, they asked Brad Hand to go out and give the Marlins four or five innings and they’d turn things over to their bullpen who had been very good in the series.  Hand gave them 5 uneven innings, giving up just 1 run despite allowing 5 hits and two walks.  His best contribution was turning a nifty double play in the 2nd inning, fielding a Span comebacker and getting the 1-6-3 double play.  The Nationals would ground into 2 more double plays in the game, as the series would slip away from them in this frustrating game.  The Marlins took a 2-1 lead into the 6th inning, before getting 2 runs in the 6th and 6 more in the 8th inning.  Dee Gordon, who hit .579 for the series, went 3-4, and Giancarlo Stanton doubled and homered (2) for the Marlins.  The Marlins bullpen held up their end of the bargain, giving up 1 hit in 4 scoreless innings.
