Round 1 - #3 STL sweats it out in 5 to hold off upstart Cincy (#14)

A close hard fought 5 game series went the Cardinals way in a game they really shouldn’t have won. Thanks to Joey for a close 5 game set to start off the Holiday tournament.

Game 1 – Cincinnati 10 St. Louis 1 (Cincy leads 1-0)
A 2 run homer by Zack Cozart in the 2nd inning was all the support that Johnny Cueto would need. Cueto went 8 innings allowing only 1 run on 3 hits. Cozart would end up with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. Jay Bruce went 2 for 5 with homer and Joey Votto walked 4 times. John Lackey went 5 innings giving up 6 runs and would not be seen again.

Game 2 – St. Louis 7 Cincinnati 4 (Series tied at 1)
In what would become a trend for St. Louis, the Cards 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to tie up the series. Trevor Rosenthal came on to pitch a 1-2-3 9th for the save. After the Reds had tied the game in the top half of the 8th, the Cards had 2 runners on via walks with 2 outs in the bottom half of inning. Kolten Wong hit a ground ball triple just inside the line scoring 2. Matt Adams lined a single for the final run. The Reds added 2 more home runs, one each for Jay Bruce and pitcher Mike Leake. Hot hitting Cozart had 2 more hits.

Game 3 – Cincinnati 5 St. Louis 4 (Cincy leads 2-1)
In the pivotal game 3 of a 5 game series the Reds tallied the winning run on a 2 out double by pinch hitter Skip Schumaker. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, Todd Frazier smoked a double off the wall in left. After intentionally walking Marlon Byrd, Schumaker pinch hit for Aroldis Chapman and stroked the game winner. Reds pitcher Anthony DeSclafini was injured in the 2nd inning. Manager Scigliano did a masterful job of using his relief staff to pull out the victory. Cozart went 2-4 and is hitting .538 for the series.

Game 4 – St. Louis 4 Cincinnati 1 (Series tied at 2)
St. Louis’ vaunted starting staff finally came through with a dominant game. Jaime Garcia went 7 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Kevin Siegrist and Trevor Rosenthal closed out the victory. Mark Reynolds had the key hit, a 3 run homer in the 5th that pushed this series back to St. Louis for the deciding game. Reds pitching has held the Cards to a .183 batting average over the first 4 games.

Game 5 – St. Louis 8 Cincinnati 7 (12 Innings) St. Louis wins series 3-2
In a dramatic final game the Cards scored the winning run in the 12th inning on a wild pitch from Kevin Gregg. Neither first game starters got the call in the deciding game. The Cards went with Michael Wacha and the Reds went with Brandon Finnegan.
The game was scoreless until the 4th when Eugenio Suarez, subbing for the hot hitting Cozart, smacked a 3 run double off the wall in left center. The Cards finally got to Finnegan in the 5th where a double by Matt Holiday and a triple by Mark Reynolds closed to the gap to 1. Then the Reds seemed to put the game away in the top of the 8th. With 2 outs and no one on base, Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips singled. Todd Frazier followed with a massive bomb to left center. A double by Suarez and single by Byrd added another run and the Reds lead 7-2.
The Cards bounced right back. Matt Carpenter doubled home Wong who had walked to lead off the inning. A wild pitch and sac fly by Jason Heyward plated 2 more. Going to the bottom of the 9th the Cards trailed 7-5.
In came Aroldis Chapman, arguably the best closer in baseball. After giving up a 1 out single to Yadier Molina, pinch hitter Stephen Piscotty hit a big fly down the left field line to tie the score at 7.
It would stay that way until the 11th. Matt Holiday was HBP. A single by Reynolds moved Holliday to second and brought in pinch runner Peter Bourjos. A hustling Molina avoided the double play and moved Bourjos to 3rd with 1 out. A wild pitch by Kevin Gregg brought home the winning run and allowed the faithful to go home happy.

Thanks to Joey Scigliano for a close hard fought series.

Round #1 - MIA(10) defeats WAS(7) in 5

Game 1 at Washington
Miami 6 Washington 2
WP: Jose Fernandez (1-0)
LP: Max Scherzer (0-1)

Jose Fernandez was the story of this game.  He struck out 11 Nationals, many of them in key spots, as he pitched 7 innings, giving up 1 unearned run in the Miami victory.  Miami got their runs off the long ball with hitting 3 home runs along the way.  Giancarlo Stanton gave them a lead from which they’d never look back with a 2R HR in the 3rd inning.  Miami turned 4 great plays in the game, a trend that would continue in the series.  Washington left 9 men on base – a total that had them shaking their head at the end of the game.

Game 2 at Washington
Miami 10 Washington 0
WP: Dan Haren (1-0)
LP: Jordan Zimmerman (0-1)

Christian Yelich paced the Marlins in the laugher.  Yelich went 5-5 with 3 doubles and scored 4 runs.  Stanton contributed 3 more RBIs by doubling after he’d stuck out 3 times earlier.  Miami pounded out 16 hits in total, and Dan Haren turned back the clock to pitch a complete game shutout, giving up 4 hits and striking out 6.  Miami has kept Washington at bay through two games holding them to a .206 BA.

Game 3 at Miami
Washington 2 Miami 1
WP: Stephen Strasburg (1-0)
LP: Adam Conley (0-1)
SV: Craig Stammen (1)

Jayson Werth gave the Nationals their first lead of the series when he took a fast ball out of the park in the 2nd inning of game 3.  Stephen Strasburg pitched well and earned the victory by striking out 7 and giving up 1 earned run in six innings of work.  The Nationals bullpen came on and did what they failed to do so many times down the stretch for Matt Williams – they made the lead stand up with 3 scoreless innings.  Washington bats are still cold – this can’t last, can it?

Game 4 at Miami
Washington 8 Miami 0
WP: Gio Gonzalez (1-0)
LP: Mat Latos (0-1)

Here come the Nationals bats!  Washington scores 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning and cruise to an easy win.  It’s Washington to plays long ball hitting 4 (Harper, Robinson, Rendon and Desmond) home runs.  Harper, who entered the game 1-10, gets 3 hits total, as he shows signs of breaking out of his mini-slump.  Miami can manage only 5 singles off the Nationals’ pitchers, as Gio Gonzalez strikes out 8 in 7 innings of work.  The Nationals turn 3 double plays in the game, never giving the Marlins a chance to get their home crowd into the game.  We’ll be going back to Washington to play a Game 5.

Game 5 at Washington
Miami 10 Washington 1
WP: Brad Hand (1-0)
LP: Max Scherzer (0-2)

With Jose Fernanadez unavailable to make a second start for Miami, they asked Brad Hand to go out and give the Marlins four or five innings and they’d turn things over to their bullpen who had been very good in the series.  Hand gave them 5 uneven innings, giving up just 1 run despite allowing 5 hits and two walks.  His best contribution was turning a nifty double play in the 2nd inning, fielding a Span comebacker and getting the 1-6-3 double play.  The Nationals would ground into 2 more double plays in the game, as the series would slip away from them in this frustrating game.  The Marlins took a 2-1 lead into the 6th inning, before getting 2 runs in the 6th and 6 more in the 8th inning.  Dee Gordon, who hit .579 for the series, went 3-4, and Giancarlo Stanton doubled and homered (2) for the Marlins.  The Marlins bullpen held up their end of the bargain, giving up 1 hit in 4 scoreless innings.

Round #1 - DET(14) upsets TEX(3) in 4

GAME 1 - Globe Life Park
Price vs Martinez
Lions 22, Cowboys 12

Ooops, that was a typo.  I meant Tigers and Rangers, although with the 32 runs being scored this more resembled a football game than any baseball game I know of.  Detroit jumped out to a 12-0 lead and went into coast mode.  David Price picked a fine time to have a good post season outing.  With no pressure on him he fired 6 innings of shutout ball before the bottom of the Tiger pen came in to give up 12 backdoor runs.  Miggy had 6 RBI's, but his teammate JMart outdid him with 8 RBI's.  Miggy had 2 homers and the Martinez boys combined for 3.
Tigers lead series 1-0

GAME 2
Verlander vs Gallardo
Tigers 2, Rangers 0

Just a day before both teams combined for 32 runs.  Just 24 hours later it looked like the dead ball era was reincarnated.  Justin Verlander was brilliant, allowing just 2 hits, while fanning 9 in 8 innings and 105 pitches before handling the ball off to Joakim Soria who pitched a perfect 9th.  Detroit broke the ice with a solo blast in the 4th off the hot bat of JMart.  Yoenis Cespedes led off the 6th with a solo shot to provide and insurance run that the Verlander/Soria combination did not need.
Tigers lead series 2-0

GAME 3 - Comerica Park
Hamels vs A.Sanchez
Rangers 4, Tigers 3

Trade deadline acquisition Cole Hamels channeled his innermost 2009 form to hold down the potent Tiger bats and stave off elimination.  After jumping out to a 2-0 lead the Rangers gave back 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a 3 run shot by Nick Castellanos.  That would be the only blip on Hamels record, as the tough left battled hard and did not give up another run.  In the top of the 5th the Rangers took the lead for good on a 2 run double by Sin-Shin Choo.  Hamels tired after 8 innings and 120 pitchers and gave way to Tolleson, who mowed down the Motown 9 for the save.
Tigers lead series 2-1

GAME 4
C.Lewis vs Simon
Tigers 6, Rangers 5

To this point the road team had won every game.  Detroit was
set on stopping that trend and avoiding a decisive game 5.  Texas, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead had their backs against the wall and hoped to go back home with a chance to close out the series.  Coby Lewis looked in full command over the first 3 innings, but the Tiger bats got hot real quick when Yoenis Cespedes hit a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 4th with one out.  The bottom of the 5th would be even crueler to Lewis.  J.McCann got to first on a hard smash off Adrian Beltre's glove.  That E-5 was followed up by a Iglesias single.  Gose's 2 run triple put the Tigers up by a run.  Ian Kinsler's RBI double made it a 2 run lead and V-Mart's RBI double made it a comfortable 3 run lead.  With Al Simon being as generous as Lewis there was no comfort.  Mitch Moreland had an RBI double then scored on a ground out to make it a one run game.  At this point Simon's day (5ER/5.1IP) was done and a brigade of Tiger relievers would march in and out of the game for the next 3 2/3 innings.  That legion would get to Soria, who threw a perfect 9th inning to lock down the win and the series for the underdog Tigers.
Tigers win series 3-1

Round #1 - CLE(8) sweeps BAL(9) in 3

Baltimore bats fell silent as Cleveland pitching dominates this series.  Brief writeup below:

Game 1  Cleveland 2 Baltimore 0
Progressive Field
Tillman vs Kluber

Corey Kluber holds Baltimore to 6 hits over 7 innings, including 9 Ks (Baltimore strikes out 13 times for the game).  Tillman kept pace for 5 innings as neither team could break through until Cleveland scored twice in the bottom of the 6th for all the scoring in this one.  Baltimore slugger Adam Jones goes 0-4 with 4 Ks.  Baltimore 3-4-5 hitters goes 1 for 12 with 10 Ks and 6 LOBs.

Game 2 Cleveland 2 Baltimore 1
Progressive Field
Chen vs Salazar

Baltimore finally breaks through for a 1 run lead in the top of the third on an Adam Jones
RBI  single.  That would be the end of the offensive day for Baltimore as Salazar shuts down the O's, recording 7 Ks (eventually O's would srtike out ONLY 12 times in this one.).  Cleveland SS Francisco Lindor (who came in 2nd in AL-ROY voting) recorded three great plays in this one to help hold Baltimore down. Amonte drove in the game winner in the bottom of the 7th taking advantage of Gerrardo Parra's weak right arm in left field to drive in Lindnor with two out from 2nd base.

Game 3 Cleveland 13 Baltimore 2
Camden Yards
Carrasco vs. Jimenez

Jimenez breaks down early yielding 5 runs to Cleveland in the top of the 2nd inning and three more in the third.  A series of Baltimore relief pitchers then gives up 5 more in the seventh to mercifully end this series.  Baltimore strikes out 6 more times in this one and ends the tourney below the Mendoza line as a team (.179!)  JJ Hardy lead the power hitters from Baltimore with Baltimore's only HR of the series after this one was well out of reach.  Once again the 3-4-5 hitters for Baltimore fail to deliver, going 1-10.

Thanks to Jim for getting this in early (not the early exit though LOL:-).  Well played throughout on his side of the diamond as Cleveland clearly outperformed Baltimore in all phases of the game!

Good luck to all the rest of the way!  When does KOD 23 start Marc? LOL

Mark Nixon

Round #1 - Seattle(13) upsets Houston(4) in 5

In a fantastic series featuring two extra inning games and three games won by one run, the lowly but hungry Seattle club upset the heavily favored Astros in five to advance....

This was one heck of a battle between Bruce and me, taking two hours to play due to all the position jockeying and pitching changes in this series. Here's a brief writeup:

Game One: Dallas Keuchel and Felix Hernandez bump heads in a great duel. Hernandez strikes out 11 and Kuechel 10, providing extra air conditioning for Minute Maid Park due to all the empty cuts. But Hernandez also was prone to the longball from the get-go, giving up a two-run homer in the first to Carlos Correa and another to Jason Castro. Correa had a magnificent game, driving in three and making a stellar defensive play to save a run. Houston 4, Seattle 1.

Game Two:
Seattle comes back with the stellar Hisashi Iwakuma dominating Houston by strikingSeattle 4, Houston 2.

Game Three:
Seattle jumps out to an early 3-0 off a battered Lance McCullers. But Houston isn't finished, as Evan Gattis ties it at three in the sixth with a long homer off Taijan Walker, who had been cruising until then. But Seattle jumps out for two more in the bottom of the inning as Seth Smith scorched a triple. But Houston gets single runs in seventh and eighth, with Gattis contributing another RBI.
out eight in only 5.2 innings and Mark Lowe and Charlie Furbush keeping the Astros bats at bay. Seattle only sprayed seven hits but prospered from three Houston errors to win.
With the game tied at five in the bottom of the 11th, Seattle pinch hit little-used Jesus Montero. He proceeded to crush a two run homer down the left field line to send the home crowd into the frenzy and give Seattle a 2-1 series lead. Seattle 7, Houston 5 (11).

Game Four:
With their season on the line, Houston comes out strong with three runs in the first two innings to chase ineffective Seattle starter Roenis Ellis. Colby Rasmus and Correa crack doubles to open the scoring. But Seattle gets two back in the fourth on Nellie Cruz's second homer of the series. After that, both teams' offenses took the rest of the day off. Seattle's James Paxton, normally a starter, came in to shut down Houston over 5.1 innings, while Houston relievers kept Seattle off the board. Seattle had a few chances to tie, including a no-out bases loaded situation, but couldn't crack the relief corps. Houston 3, Seattle 2.
Game Five:  A rematch between Keuchel and Hernandez for the chance to move on. Neither starter is as sharp as in game one, with Keuchel giving up three runs and 10 hits in six innings. Hernandez gave up three in seven innings, as Houston pounded two doubles (two by Rasmus) and a homer to tire him. Seattle looked to break it open in the top of the seventh, as Cruz knocked a two-run shot, his third, to give Seattle a 5-3 lead. But Houston tied it in the bottom of the eighth, as Jose Altuve and Correa hit back to back doubles and Furbush uncorked a wild pitch to send the tying run to third (which later scored).

But Seattle again found extra inning heroics to take the series. In the top of the 11th, Kyle Seager lined his fourth double of the series to send home pinch runner Chris Taylor with what turned out to be the winning run. Fernando Rodney did the job with flare in the bottom of the 11th to send Seattle home happy, striking out the side, shooting his trademark imaginary arrow  and leaping in joy. Seattle 6, Houston 5 (11)

Regards,
Joe Pryweller

Round #1 - Toronto(2) sweeps Oakland(15) in 3

2015 Oakland Athletics vs 2015 Toronto Blue Jays

GAME 1 @ Rogers Centre in Toronto
Sonny Gray vs Marco Estrada

Toronto wins 6-2

WP: Marco Estrada (1-0)
LP: Sonny Gray (0-1)
SV: None
HR: Ben Zobrist (1), Edwin Encarnacion (1)
MVP: Edwin Encarnacion (1-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI)

As is often times the case in big games and big series, one play can often be the turning point for momentum and set the tone for all the games.  The play in this one was an odd one in the 5th inning of the opener with the game tied 1-1.  Kevin Pillar (3-5, 2 RBI) led off the inning with a single and then advanced to 2nd on a failed pick off attempt by Sonny Gray.  The next batter, Ben Revere, grounded an easy roller to Ben Zobrist at 2nd, but for some reason Zobrist attempted to nail the speedy Pillar going to 3rd instead of getting the sure out at first.  Pillar beat the throw and the Jays had runners on the corners for the big bats of their lineup.  Josh Donaldson (2-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) followed with an RBI single and Edwin Encarnacion cleared the bases with a 3 run bomb deep into the left field bleachers.  Marco Estrada (6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 K) and 3 Blue Jay relievers made sure that those runs would be enough by limiting the A's to just 5 hits.  Zobrist, the defensive goat, was the lone bright spot on the A's side with 2 hits including a home run.

GAME 2 @ Rogers Centre in Toronto
Scott Kazmir vs Mark Buehrle

Toronto wins 4-0

WP: Mark Buehrle (1-0)
LP: Scott Kazmir (0-1)
SV: None
HR: None
MVP: Mark Buehrle ( 9 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K)

Mark Buehrle showed why manager John Gibbons chose him in game 2 over mid season acquisition David Price.  Buehrle was dominant and never in trouble in this one allowing just an infield single to Danny Valencia in the 2nd inning.  The crazy thing was Valencia was originally called out but A's manager Bob Melvin called fo a review and Valencia was called safe.  Buerhle was not rattled and retired 21 of the next 22 batters to finish off the gem.  Scott Kazmir seemed unprepared to start this game for Oakland as the Jays jumped all over the lefty for 3 runs in the first.  Kevin Pillar walked to lead off followed by a single by Trot Tulowitzki.  The A's veteran lefty then lst all control walking Donaldson, Encarnacion and Jose Bautista consecutively to force home 2 runs.  A Chris Colabello sacrifice fly added the 3rd run and the Jays never looked back.  The Jays didn't need much offense but they did get multi hit games from Pillar, Donaldson and Colabello.

GAME 3 @ O.co Coliseum in Oakland
R.A. Dickey vs Jesse Hahn

Toronto wins 6-4

WP: Ryan Tepera (1-0)
LP: Tyler Clippard (0-1)
SV: Roberto Osuna (1)
HR: Jose Bautista (1), Danny Valencia (1)
MVP: Jose Bautista (3-4, 1 HR, 1 run, 2 RBI)

Toronto, looking to close out the best of 5 series, jumped out to an early 3 run lead thanks to Jose Bautista.  Joey Bats hit a solo homer to lead off the 2nd and then drove in the 3rd run in the 3rd with a single that scored Josh Donaldson.  The A's would not go quietly though as Danny Valencia hit a lead off homer in the 5th and a wild 6th inning saw the Blue Jays score 2 to tie the game at 3.  Jake Smolinski led off the 6th by getting drilled in the ribs by a rare R.A. Dickey fastball.  Marcus Semien followed with a single with both he and Smolinski advancing an extra base on an outfield bobble.  Brett Lawrie followed with a walk and then a Billy Burns fielders choice plated Smolinski.  Another walk to Stephen Vogt loaded the bases back up and then a Dickey wild pitch tied the game at 3 when Semien scurried home.  Dickey got Valencia to line to 3rd and then walked Billy Butler to load the bases with 2 outs.  Brett Cecil was called in to face Josh Reddick with the A's hoping to push across some big runs, but Cecil induced an inning ending grounder to end the threat and keep the game locked at 3.  The game would stay that way until the bottom of the 8th when Oakland struck for a go ahead run.  After a Stephen Vogt 1 out triple, Ryan Tepera was brought in to try and work out of the jam.  Tepera walked Valencia intentionally and then hit Billy Butler to load the bases with 1 out.  Reddick was once again in the pressure spot and this time he delivered with a sac fly deep enough to score Vogt with the go ahead run.  Tyler Clippard was brought in to close out the game and extend the series for the A's.  The Jays bats did not show Clippard much respect, with Bautista greeting him with a inning starting double down the left field line.  Clippard retired Colabello, but then walked the next 2 batters to load the bases.  Drew Pomeranz was brought in to work out of the jam but pinch hitter Troy Tulowitzki had other ideas with a single to right center scoring pinch runner Dalton Pompey and Devon Travis to give the Jays a 1 run lead.  A Kevin Pillar grounder knocked in an insurance run sending the Jays back out to the field with a 6-4 lead and 3 outs to record.  Closer Roberto Osuna was brought in for the first time in the series but showed no ill effects from the layoff as he struck out all 3 Athletics batters to end the game and the series.
